Isla de la Juventud

A Dream island

Many of the places visited during your holiday in the tropics with an MSC cruise to the Caribbean, Cuba and Antilles are sure to stay with you.

Of these, Isla de la Juventud could have served as an inspiration for the perfect deserted island setting for a thousand different adventures thought up by writers such as Stevenson and Barrie

With a shape similar to a giant apostrophe, it has less than 90,000 inhabitants: Nueva Gerona, its biggest city, is home to 15,000 of them.  Also known as Isla de Pinos (Isle of Pines), most of its territory is dedicated to the preservation of nature. Parque Nacional Ciénaga de Lanier has been protecting the island’s indigenous plant and animal life since the turn of the 21st century, while Parque Nacional Marino de Punta Frances Punta Pedernales runs along the southern coast of the island and has been protecting the Cuban sea species for over 30 years.
Once disembarked from your cruise ship, an MSC Cruises excursion will take you to the uncontaminated waters of the National Sea Park for some exciting snorkelling. However, an MSC cruise to Cuba is not limited to natural beauty: the island’s turbulent history marked by military coups and revolutions has left evidence in every corner.  Isla de la Juventud was so remote in the past that it was chosen as a detention centre. During your holiday to the Caribbean, you should not miss out on the remains of Presidio Modelo.
A short distance from Nuova Gerona, this ex prison was closed at the end of the 1960s and transformed into a museum. To this day its circular blocks with cells once filled with prisoners that were watched from central observation towers sends goose bumps down visitor’s spines. Another revolution-themed excursion will take you to Museo Finca El Abra, a property with links the 19th century Cuban hero José Martí.

Light-heartedness, Sun and History

Sailing with MSC Cruises to the Caribbean will take you on a discovery of – among other jewels of the region -  Cuba, a destination of all-around enjoyment

Among the many of Caribbean islands that can be visited with MSC Cruises, Cuba is a historical and artistic treasure that can only be admired – from the sea and from the land. Strategically located between the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, this splendid island is caressed by the trade winds and enjoys a tropical climate with humid summers and dry winters.
Marvellous natural inlets are the sites of its main cities: Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago di Cuba. Saying Cuba calls to mind the white beaches of Varadero and Cayo Largo, crystal-clear waters, and lush vegetation of all shades of green, as well as the bright colours of the buildings, the music, the food and a culture that blends Spanish colonialism with the traditions of African slaves.

Those who come to Cuba cannot but be enchanted by it. It is no accident that Christopher Columbus exclaimed “The most beautiful land that the human eye has ever seen!” when he landed here. And what about the Nobel prize laureate Ernest Hemingway? He was so fascinated by the island that he decided to move here and spent the next twenty years at his Finca Vigia (lookout house).
