Our Signature on the sea

Our Signature on the sea

We’ve been exploring the seas for over 300 years. What began with one ship has grown into a magnificent fleet.
Over the centuries, the Aponte family have remained dedicated to navigating the oceans and in 1970 founded the Mediterranean Shipping Company, which is now the 2nd largest container carrier in the world. Having such a strong heritage in seafaring and a love of the sea, MSC Cruises launched in 1988 and has become one of the fastest growing cruise companies in the world, with a fleet of 12 ships.

  • Our captains must have at least 11 years of navigational experience, come from our cargo activity around the world and undergo rigorous ongoing training programmes
  • Selective crew recruitment and ongoing staff training ensure a high quality service
  • Our itineraries cover more than 1,000 routes around the world
  • Elegantly-designed interiors featuring natural stone and marble predominantly sourced from Italy
  • Superior quality fabrics, gold-leaf mosaics and Swarovski crystal staircases
  • More balcony cabins with sea views than any other cruise line on the market
  • An eco-friendly cruise company, with innovative energy-saving and water-recycling systems installed on our ships
  • Over 11 million travellers have already enjoyed a cruise with MSC

STATE-OF-THE-ART SAFETY

Proud heirs of a unique seafaring heritage, MSC Cruises nurtures long-established values of maritime professionalism in all our crew at every level. We support them throughout their careers to ensure their expertise is rigorously honed and continuously kept up to date. And we equip them with the most advanced navigation and safety technologies.

For example, our ultramodern ships feature an innovative Route Monitoring System which uses satellite technology to relay the vast amount of data provided on board to the MSC Cruises Maritime Operations Headquarters in Sorrento. Here, a QPS server system sends the information to a further array of sophisticated systems, including a Quaestor route preparation and analysis tool.

This constantly monitors and analyses the ship’s position, speed, heading and course, together with the depth, current and other parameters of the surrounding waters, plus the position of any other vessels within a 40-mile radius. As a result, all our ships follow a totally safe course at all times, whether cruising, manoeuvring, piloting or docking. Similar state-of-the-art solutions relay complete data from the engine control room and onboard weather systems both to the bridge and Sorrento, enabling a real-time overview and constant optimisation. This offers the additional benefit of outstanding ecological performance across the fleet, optimising power and fuel consumption to keep emissions to a minimum. So the world we pass through safely is as beautiful for future generations as it is for us today.

Eco ships

We have great respect for the world’s oceans and we while we sail an increasing number of guests across the globe, we continuously aim to reduce our impact on the environment. Through the use of modern technologies and environmentally friendly materials, we are effectively lowering the environmental impact of our cruises. From using the best quality fuel available in ports, to efficiency-enhancing technology, to our advanced onboard recycling systems, we strongly believe that leadership comes with increased responsibility towards the environment.

Therefore, we are continuously working to reduce our impact on board and ashore, and optimize cruise itineraries to help reduce fuel consumption

The most effective way to save fuel in cruising is by lowering water resistance. MSC Cruises uses a TBT-free anti-fouling paint on the hulls of all of its ships to prevent hull fouling and substantially reduce drag

Our voyage planning and monitoring system allows us to implement route analysis and track each of our ships with an update rate of one second and an accuracy of less than five meters. By monitoring technical data such as power and fuel consumption, we are effectively reducing CO2 emissions.

Each MSC cruise ship is designed and built with the best technology available and the entire MSC fleet features state-of-the-art technologies and equipment to protect marine and air environment.

Each ship in the MSC Cruises fleet has an environmental officer who is responsible for all environmental aspects on board. All recycling and waste management activities are carefully monitored and crew members dealing with recycling procedures as well as the handling, collection, sorting and management of garbage, receive training to operate in accordance with our procedures.

MSC Cruises has been forward-looking in the way it has built its ships and ready them for future rules and regulations. Our engines are already certified for the future NOX emissions standards, and are in compliance with latest IMO-MARPOL Annex VI requirement. In addition, some of our ships are equipped with exhaust cleaning systems, to reduce SOx emissions released from the main engine.

Our optimized ballast water management system also complies with the latest IMO guidelines aimed at minimizing environmental impact.
